How Much Should You Tip Your Bus Driver?

Are you looking forward to a chartered bus trip? Customers tip to show appreciation for excellent service. How much is enough to show appreciation for the time, attention, professionalism and energy of your bus driver? Tipping can vary, depending on the type of trip.

To Tip or Not to Tip a Charter Bus Driver?

Should you tip a charter bus driver? While it's not often necessary, there's not a bus driver in the world who won't appreciate a tip! Tips for charter bus drivers can be handled by either a mass donation of tips where all of the passengers contribute in a collection or by donating a certain amount per day to the driver. Individuals can also offer tips. However, before you tip, check with the charter service or tour company to see if drivers are allowed to accept tips, as often gratuity may be included in the tour price. Always feel free to ask the tour manager about how tipping should be handled, especially in situations where there may be several different bus drivers per trip.

Day Trips

It's suggested that travelers tip around $2 dollars per person for a group tour, or tip between 10% and 20% of the total trip price. That’s especially true if is a day or half day trip. Was this a private tour or trip? Chances are that the driver deserves a larger tip than for a group tour. What kind of services did the tour or trip offer? Did you feel that your needs were taken care of? Was the driver particularly helpful or attentive to your needs or to the needs of the group? That's another good guideline for tips.

Multi-Day Trips

Several websites suggest tipping between $3-$10 a day for both the tour manager and the driver, as they both work hard to make your multi-day trip special and memorable; one makes sure that your trip safely gets from point A to point B, while the other generously gives of his or her travel expertise. Still not sure? Don't be afraid to ask the bus company about tipping guidelines, as many have a website section devoted to just that. Also, be aware of your own personal needs: do you feel that each person did a good job? Or were they inattentive? Within reason, let the tip reflect how hard you feel the bus personnel worked for your trip or tour.
